Symptoms & Diagnosis
Neurological symptoms are commonly seen in patients with TBI and include such symptoms as headache, dizziness, stroke, myelopathy (nerve damage to the spinal cord), proprioception problems (awareness of body position), psychophysiological disorders (disconnection between brain and body), cognitive problems (attention, memory, difficulties concentrating) and other emotional issues. Not all patients with neurological symptoms have experienced a recent brain injury or traumatic hit to the head as commonly thought. As the brain ages, it is common to experience a variety of neurological symptoms.
- Altered smell or taste
- Burning feeling
- Confusion or cognitive changes
- Fainting, lethargy, or change in your level of consciousness
- Involuntary muscle contractions (dystonia)
- Loss of balance
- Muscle weakness
- Numbness
- Pain from an origin that does not usually cause pain or that follows the course of a specific nerve
- Paralysis or inability to move a body part
- Pins-and-needles (prickling) sensation
- Sensitivity
- Tingling
Examinations and investigations
In the context of neurology, a neurological examination refers to a physical examination of nerves, brain, and spinal cord. Depending on the suspected diagnosis, this examination can evaluate motor function, sensory function, reflexes and strength, gait (walking), cranial nerves (special nerves in the head), coordination and balance. For example, the lower motor neuron exam tests for muscle weakness on both sides of the body; this would indicate a problem in one of the lower brain regions. A complete neurological examination includes mental status testing as well as vision assessment.
